EVENDALE COUNCIL RECREATION, FIRE AND POLICE COMMITTEE MEETING
May 5, 2015 at 6:00 p.m.
Present were Council members, Bill Puthoff, John Ranz, Jeff Albrinck, Police Chief Neil Korte, Fire Chief Mike Hauck, and Recreation Director David Nichols. Also in attendance were Chief Financial Officer, Cynthia Caracci, and Assistant to the Mayor; David Elmer.
Recreation
• Mr. Nichols reported that there will be the seasonal hiring ordinance on this month’s agenda for swim team, concessions, tennis and Fun in the Sun.
• The outdoor spa has been properly repaired and is ready for the summer.
• The Evendale Pavilion Series has been finalized and pocket schedules can be picked up throughout the village. Evendale resident, Matt Schneider will lead off this year’s concert series on May 16.
• Mr. Ranz relayed a message that he received from a resident expressing a concern over the condition of the soccer fields. The committee unanimously agreed that the recreation department and service department need to properly communicate any maintenance issues.
Police
• Chief Korte reported that he has added a Resolution to this month’s agenda for the Village’s participatione in Hamilton County’s Heroin Task Force.
• Chief Korte also discussed the ordinance on this month’s agenda for updating and approving fees for professionals serving Mayor’s Court.
Fire Department
• Chief Hauck confirmed that he has currently received 40 applications for the Firefighter /EMT position. It is his expectation that the final candidates will be interviewed in late July with formal hiring by counsel at the August council meeting.
• Chief Hauck has informed the committee that he has already spent $10,000 in fixing Engine 40 (2001) and that he is holding off on repairs to Engine 240 and Tower 40 until the total extent of the repairs for Engine 40 is determined. There is a reasonable likelihood that the maintenance on the existing fire apparatus may exceed this year’s budget.
Administration
• Dave Elmer reported that he has scheduled a meeting for May 26 regarding “Thru the Valley”, with IBI and James Jeffers to review concerns and further discuss village objectives on the highway project.
• Dave Elmer discussed the ever changing landscape of healthcare and indicated that the Village has received the option to accept a 5% increase with their current provder with no bidding. The committee discussed the options and the possibility that if we get too greedy and initiate a bidding process, we may not be able to secure the nominal 5% increase. Further, the committee unanimously agreed that a continuity of healthcare is extremely valuable and, therefore, strongly recommend that the Village accept the 5% increase with no bid process.
• Dave Elmer discussed the current status of evaluating a property maintenance code and asked for clarification as to the extent of any revision to the current code. The committee discussed the primary concerns of the exterior ( more visible code violations ) with the interior (potentially more hazardous code violations ) and requested that Mr. Elmer provide us samples of current building codes that have been tried and tested and have held up to judicial scrutiny. At the end of the meeting, Mr. Elmer did provide the committee with copies of the Colerain Township Building Code and each committee member has been encouraged to review for upcoming discussion.
There being no further discussion and upon a Motion by Mr. Puthoff and seconded by Mr. Ranz, the meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
